Sustainable building: a six-dimension decision framework

Climate, energy, water, materials, comfort and maintenance form a simple framework to avoid reducing sustainable construction to one label.

30 July 2026

1. Climate and site

Orientation, wind, sun, rain, topography and risks condition design choices.

2. Energy

Reducing demand comes before sizing generation equipment.

3. Water

Consumption, storage, drainage, rainwater and sanitation should form a coherent system.

4. Materials

Durability, origin, production energy, repairability and reuse complement purchase price.

5. Comfort and health

Ventilation, light, heat, humidity and noise influence actual building use.

6. Maintenance

Performance must remain achievable with available skills, parts and operating budgets.
